Hark! the Herald Angels Sing

Text by Charles Wesley, adapted
Music by Felix Mendelssohn
Arranged by Sally DeFord

This little arrangement was born of necessity. While looking for accompaniments for our Christmas sing-along, I couldn't seem to find one with enough "punch" to satisfy me. This one, as you might expect after a comment like that, has only one dynamic level... loud. (Wesley wouldn't approve. He apparently wanted gentle music for these lyrics. Mendelssohn's setting probably wasn't what he had in mind, and I've just made it worse.)

The score can be used in a couple of different ways. It makes a nice piano/organ duet, with all the tricky parts falling to the piano and the organ playing the basic hymn. It can also be used as an accompaniment for either choir or congregation, singing from the 1985 LDS hymnal, or from the half-sheet linked below. If using the hymnal, you'll need to verbally warn the congregation that the rythm is doubled for the last "newborn king," like this:

Lyrics

Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled
Joyful all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With th'angelic host proclaim
Christ is born in Bethlehem
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace
Hail the Son of Righteousness
Light and life to all he brings
Ris'n with healing in his wings
Mild, he lays his glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King
