Only Love

About the Song

Text: Sally DeFord and Josh Weed
Music: Sally DeFord

When we truly become converted to Jesus Christ, committed to Him…the way we treat others becomes increasingly filled with patience, kindness, a gentle acceptance, and a desire to play a positive role in their lives.

~Marvin J. Ashton

Josh Weed, the co-author of the lyrics, gave this song its title. That title phrase– “Only Love”– is an imperative. It could have been rendered “Do Only That Which is Motivated By, and Suffused With, Pure, Christ-like Love,” but that’s not nearly so singable.

This kind of love is not a noun but a verb. This is a love that must be chosen, and allows no limitations or boundaries to be set around it. It would appear that this kind of love doesn’t come naturally to us humans. Perhaps that’s why the Lord commands that we learn to do it. It takes conscious choice; it takes will; it takes practice; it takes prayer; and it makes us more like Him.

Let us open our arms to each other, accept each other for who we are, assume everyone is doing the best he or she can…

~Marvin J. Ashton

Excellent counsel indeed.

The track sung by Josh was his first time recording a studio vocal. It was, perhaps, more harrowing than he thought it would be, since I turn into a veritable tyrant under headphones, but Josh was a good sport and did a great job.

Lyrics

So many voices crying out to heaven
So many heartaches along this mortal road
So many burdens borne in isolation
So many pilgrims walking through this world alone

So many valleys dividing us asunder
The way is long, the rivers deep and wide
Come, build the bridges that will stand forever
And bring us safe at last to Jesus’ side

Oh heaven’s children, knit your hearts together
With bonds no power in life or death can sever
We can smooth this strait and narrow way for one another
If we only choose to love
Only love
Only love
Only love

When night is falling, keep the hearth-fires burning
Warm and unchanging, to light the wanderer home
God can unite us if our hearts are willing
And fill us with His love, a love that overflows

Our strength is stronger, our hope is new and brighter
When we are one in heart and might and mind
There will be triumph, joy and light and laughter
To last beyond the boundaries of time

Oh heaven’s children, knit your hearts together
With bonds no power in life or death can sever
We can smooth this strait and narrow way for one another
If we only choose to love
Only love
Only love
If we only choose to love

Only love
Only love
Only love

Last night in my prayer I asked Heavenly Father to strengthen me for today and the answer came in the way of being introduced to this song by a friend. Today begins a trial for the termination of parental rights of our foster children’s biological parents. Thank you for writing and sharing powerful, spiritual music

This is a song that is so needed for our day and age. I loved the video about the angels in disguise. What a great example of manhood to me, and this song is truly wonderful.
