I think of the martyrs who died as a result of translating the Bible into other languages outside of Latin so the common people could read for themselves. I think of our families who immigrated here to America to give us, their progeny, a better opportunity than what the previous country held.

We sing it at some of our reunions every year. Reunions are perfect for thinking of those who went before us. Also, we sing it to touch the lives of relatives who have never known their ancestors, or who once did, and need to be reminded of how their efforts have affected our lives.
