Silent Night (Vocal Solo)

About the Song

Words by Joseph Mohr
Music by Franz Gruber
Arranged by Sally DeFord

This vocal solo arrangement is very similar to the interludes used in the Silent Night cantata, since it’s basically a compilation of those interludes, mixed with a bit of the congregational version. It’s a fairly simple arrangement–nothing too tricky.

Lyrics

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
‘Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ, the Savior, is born
Christ, the Savior, is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth

Hi Sister Deford, I can’t wait to sing this gorgeous arrangement in my ward this Christmas season! I live in a very rural ward in Northern Arizona and my only accompanist will not be able to play for me this year. I’ll be singing it with the accompaniment track, so just to double check, this recording is the Low version, key of G?

Thank you for all you do!

Thank you for the beautiful Silent Night arrangement as well as the options to choose low, medium or high. I would have happily paid for the music as I have loved your arrangements for other songs. Thank you for freely sharing your talents and gifts.

    Hello
How can I get the sheet music as a soprano solo in the key of C?
Not sure how to do this.

Thanks for your help… Love all of your arrangements. They are wonderful

I love this arrangement but in the solo for medium voice I don’t see the transition for the key change and had to make one up myself. Is there something I’m missing? After the 2nd verse, where the 2nd ending begins, there should be a transition to the new key. Am I reading the music wrong?

The key change is exactly what you hear in the recording — different key, but same transition.

Hello! In the James Loynes recording, I notice that there’s a flute part that sort of comes out. Is there a C instrument obligatto? I have an awesome violinist that would really shine on this and I know many of your other pieces have obligattos.

Hello Sister DeFord – Lovely solo arrangement! Is there any way I can purchase a score of the full orchestra arrangement on the recording? I recently got a high school orchestra position and I have an excellent pianist and vocalist. I would love for my students to play/sing the solo arrangement. Please let me know. I have Orchestra boosters money to purchase things not on the school vendor list (like big music distributors). Thanks for considering!

Hi Valerie! Except for the solo instruments, the arrangement on the recording is just me messing around on some VST plugins, and there isn’t a score. 🙁 Sorry I’m no help!
