Away In a Manger (Congregation)

About the Song

Traditional text; Music by William J. Kirkpatrick, Martin Luther; Arranged by Sally DeFord

For this accompaniment, all instruments will play from the scores provided. The congregation may sing the parts as written in the hymnbook (#206, Hymns, LDS 1985), or in unison. Just in case you worry that you may have the wrong score, the obbligato does use melodic lines from the Luther tune for this song.

Like the other instrumental accompaniments on this site, this one is written to support a large congregation. The accompaniments vary in difficulty, and in suitability for various uses. You’ll need to analyze the score to determine if the accompaniment fits your particular situation and capabilities.

Lyrics

Away in a manger, no crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head
The stars in the heavens looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing, the poor baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes
I love thee, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle ’til morning is nigh

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care
And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there

I am looking for Away in a Manger with the Primary version of Asleep at the end for a choir to sing.

Thanks Sally. We did this today with our congregation, a violin, organ and piano and it really finished off the program perfectly. Thanks for all your great music and for convincing me and others to contribute their music to the world. You really make a huge difference for so many people. Merry Christmas to you!
