Away in a Manger
(simple one-page accompaniment)
About the Song
This simple little improv on the traditional melody is just something I came up with while reviewing some notation software. (If you’re interested in reading the review, you can find it here: Forte Notation Review.) I’ve debated whether to even include it here, but since I have it… here it is.
It sticks to the harmonies found in LDS Hymns #206. You can use this to accompany a singer or instrumental soloist. You could use it with a choir or congregation, though it’s probably not “meaty” enough to really support either. The accompaniment is designed to be played as written, or an octave below to give you some variation.

Lyrics
Away in a manger, no crib for his bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head;
The stars in the heavens looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing; the poor baby wakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with thee there.

You say this can be used to accompany a solo instrument. Do they just play the melody?
Love your music!
That would be the most likely use of it for an instrument unless you have someone adept at improv. 🙂
A beautiful arrangement of Away in the Manger! Thank you for sharing your talents!
