Angels We Have Heard on High

About the Song

This accompaniment is arranged for four-hand piano, and flute.  It is meant to be played as the organ accompanies hymn #203 in the LDS Hymnbook. (Other versions of the hymn may also work… no guarantees though!)

Like the other instrumental accompaniments on this site, this one is written to support a large congregation. The accompaniments vary in difficulty, and in suitability for various uses. You’ll need to analyze the score to determine if the accompaniment fits your particular situation and capabilities.

Lyrics

Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heav’nly song?
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Thank you for this! I played this with my daughter and my husband, and it was fantastic! It was also super fun to practice and learn it together. I’m back now looking for more duets 🙂

Does the organ play the 7 verse introduction along with the piano accompaniment? Or does the organ only come in on the first verse?

I believe that this year will be the 6th time I have used your lovely rendition in our Ward Christmas Program. Everyone loves singing it with piano, organ and sometimes violins and cello. Thank you, thank you for sharing your beautiful talent and songs, accompaniments and musical expertise. You are a jewel, Sally!

I’m looking for a easy hymn arrangement that I can get 4 men to sing as the closing hymn in Sacrament meeting. Any ideas?

Son of Adam, Son of heaven, Given as a ransom; Reconciling God and man, Christ, our mighty champion! What a Savior! What a Friend! What a glorious myst’ry! Once a babe in Bethlehem, Now the Lord of hist’ry. “Keith and Stuart Townend originally wrote “Joy Has Dawned” for a collection of hymns on the Apostle’s Creed. Like many carols, Stuart’s lyrics explain the Gospel story as the song develops. When we use this song in church services we combine it with one of our favorite carols, “Angels We Have Heard on High.” ”

I am wondering what program you use for the transpose/resize function on Angels we have heard on high? I would love the violin sheet music and I can not get it to work on my computer

I can hardly wait to use this for our final hymn this Christmas. Thank you for making my calling possible to accomplish. Your accessible music at no cost is the answer for our choir. This arrangement is so powerful and beautiful and we will be able to use talented pianists that don’t always get noticed or appreciated. This is the answer! Thank you, thank you!

Many, many thanks for all the wonderful music. I have used this as the final hymn for our Christmas program a number of times, and I will use it again this December. Do know you bring joy to many music lovers who both sing and listen to your music.
