Anthem of Praise

“Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
Make music for thy Lord to hear!”

St. Francis of Assisi

About the Song

Words by St. Francis of Assisi, alt. Additional words by Sally DeFord This whimsical little piece is an upbeat, rather breathless setting of the words of Francis of Assisi, with a few additions of my own.

If you attempt the choral, you’ll want to take it a bit slower than Allyse did, and buy chocolates for your accompanist. Heather’s track follows the score as written, and includes the flute obbligato, which may be used for either the solo or SATB version.

The SATB in Spanish was translated by Omar Canals, and was used in the October 2015 Latino Event “Luz de las naciones: Juventud de la promesa,” held in the LDS Conference Center.

This song is part of the “Praise to the Lord” cantata. Church Music Submission: Anthem division–Award of Merit 2012

Lyrics

All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing,
Let the alleluias ring
Join in the anthem of praise

Rejoice! thou sun with golden beam,
Thou silver moon with softer gleam
Wake ye stars, nor longer dream
Join in the anthem of praise

Thou rushing wind that art so strong
Ye clouds that sail in Heaven along,
Roll ye thunder, mighty in song
Join in the anthem of praise

Let all things their Creator bless
The wonder of his works confess
Worship Him in thankfulness
Join in the anthem of praise

Dear mother earth who day by day
Unfoldest blessings on our way
Field and flow’r His glory display
Join in the anthem of praise

Thou flowing water, pure and clear
Make music for thy Lord to hear
Alleluia! Sing and rejoice!
Heaven and nature find a voice!
Alleluia! Sing and rejoice!
Swell creation’s joyful noise!

Let all things their Creator bless
The wonder of his works confess
Worship Him in thankfulness
Join in the anthem of praise

I’m looking for a solo piano piece for this song (meaning no one singing). Would the accompaniment version for the solo singer work for that?

How would we contact Brother Canals to receive a copy of the Spanish Lyrics? We have a combined Spanish/English ward and would love to perform this in Spanish as well as English. . . . at least a verse or two. Thank-you for any help you can give.

The PDF for “Canción de loor” (SSATB), translated by Omar Canals, is found in the sheet music tab above. 🙂

I am attempting to actually see the score for several songs (Anthem of Praise, How Great is the Miracle) with the possibility of downloading the score but cannot do that. Could you offer me advice on how I can download the actual score?

Right below the description it says “sheet music downloads.” Click that, then click the score you want. That’s it. 🙂

Something must be wrong on my end. I have done that but still cannot see the actual score, just the lyrics/text to the left of the ‘download panel’. Several years ago I downloaded 2 songs and had no problems but can’t seem to accomplish it today. However, I DO appreciate your prompt reply and enjoy your music.

Would you suggest this song for sacrament meeting? I know it is up beat, but so is There is Sunshine In My Soul! Opinion?

Hmmm… if I were planning music for my ward choir to sing in Sacrament meeting, this one wouldn’t be on the list unless it was part of a larger program–but that’s just me. In all cases, your bishop has the final word. 🙂

Do you happen to have the SSAATB version in a midi file? I would like to run this piece through Musecore to analyze it. The program is messing up the pdf file– it’s adding weird pauses in every measure. I don’t really want to manually type it out.
