Love Knows No Borders

About the Song

This song is a simple expression of my feelings after the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks in the US.

September is right in the middle of Christmas prep time for musicians, so I was in Christmas mode. Many Christmas songs are sweet and major and full of bells. This one, for obvious reasons, is minor and haunting.

In the moment, my reaction to those horrible events was emotional and predictable. As I pondered how to react going forward, I realized that to extinguish the love in our hearts would be the greatest victory evil could win. When the Savior commanded us to love one another as He loved us, there were no caveats. No “ifs”.  He simply told us to love, and He was the ultimate example of loving when loving is isn’t easy. Hence, the final lines of the last verse:

We who receive Him must love without end
And carry His tidings of peace and goodwill to all men.

The SATB hymn version was revised in 2019. Please replace older copies with the new revision.

Lyrics

From lands of the sunrise
From isles of the sea
Though oceans divide us
And miles lie between
Come gather in spirit
With shepherds of old
’round Bethlehem’s cradle
Our Heavenly King to behold

For love knows no borders
And love knows no bounds
Rejoice ye together
For Jesus our Savior is born

From nations far sundered
From earth’s farthest shore
From castle and cottage
Where Jesus is Lord
Come sing with the angels
With voices made one
Ascending to heaven
In praise of the Father’s own Son

For love knows no borders
And love knows no bounds
Rejoice ye together
For Jesus our Savior is born

His love knows no borders
Nor color nor creed
No rich and no poor,
Neither bondsmen nor free
And we who receive Him
Must love without end
And carry His tidings
Of peace and good will
To all men

For love knows no borders
And love knows no bounds
Rejoice ye together
For Jesus our Savior is born

The small singing group that I am part of was presented this song to perform. I have never heard this song until I was given the music two weeks ago. What a beautiful and up-lifting song it is. With all that is happening in our world right now this song brings home what the love of Christ and his message mean. Our performances are in nursing homes and assisted living facilities and having practiced this song with our group I know the message you send to us and to them will be received with love.Blessings to you Sally DeFord!

    Hi Sally

I have just used He Loves His Little ones with a twenty strong choir of 5-11 year olds in a small village school in England. Before we sang it in our concert this morning, I told the parents the story of how you came to write it. You could have heard a pin drop! Thank you for making your music available. I love to use it in my work as a music teacher. I teach in a couple of Church of England “faith” schools and they love the different songs that they’ve never heard before. I would love to do Love Knows No Borders with them. Do you have an accompaniment track for that one? We have no pianist sadly!

Good afternoon, Sally. I just wanted to thank you for all you give small choirs (with no budget) by letting us use your music for free. I, for one, and I’m sure many more appreciate it more than I can say. Our ward choir – total of 20 bodies on the best days – sang “Love Knows No Borders” for our small town Community Carol Festival this past Christmas. My husband read your comments from the website before we sang. Its a great song for the way our world is these days. I just wanted to say thanks.

Thank you Sally, this song touches me because of the love Jesus has for everyone, from all corners of this earth. I have been working in a few of these corners and this song is definitely for our times and makes me cry. I love your songs and arrangements, thanks for these gifts to our souls.

HI Sally! We have loved your music through the years. I recently arranged a version of Love Knows No Borders for guitar, and my wife and I made a little video of it. Merry Christmas, and thank you for everything!

We sang this as a quartet on my mission: 4 missionaries from four corners of the globe. Such a perfect song, and so motivating for those on full-time missions! Still makes me cry!
