The First Noel – Voice and Flute Duet
About the Song
Years ago I arranged this favorite Christmas carol for piano solo. For the 2014 season we revived it and turned it into a voice and flute duet.
I’m labeling it a “duet” simply because the voice and flute have fairly equal time in this arrangement, and you really can’t do without both parts. If you prefer, you could assign the either of the parts other C instruments.

Lyrics
The first noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

Is there an accompaniment track without the flute?
I would really like a recording of just the piano part if you have it. I play flute and my partner sings but we don’t play piano to that level.
Thank you. Beautiful arrangment <3
God Bless you
Hi Sally! I love your music! Thank you so much for sharing your gifts!
Do you happen to have the first noel instrumental track with just piano and no flute. I was thinking of having a student play the flute solo, but I don’t have a piano player. Just let me know.
Thanks so much,
Jana Snavely
The First Noel for voice and flute is just beautiful, well-arranged and haunting! Thank you!
Sally, this piece is exquisite. I have been involved in music for years now, and my daughter is now, too. We always look at your site first when we need a piece, whether it be a solo, small group or choir. (And we love your Primary songs, too!)
Last year, my daughter invited her friend from school to sing this as she played flute in church, and even the kids were all quiet, this arrangement is so powerful. An amazing, ethereal take on a classic carol.
Thank you so much for sharing your music with all of us. Not only do you make all of us look good, but you bring a little bit of heaven here on earth.
Thank you Sally for sharing your gift so freely. I needed a piece with a flute for the month of December in our Ward. I knew I could come to you for help.
In the vocal recording, I can hear some vocals in the background between verses, during the flute part. Can you please clarify what the text is here?
The background you hear is just for effect in the recording. All the required text is in the score.
This song is pretty~ I may try to do a flute duet with a friend for our ward Christmas party. 🙂 Thanks!
What instrument is it that gives it that magical sound? Like the twinkling sound?!
You’re probably thinking of the bar chimes. 🙂
Wow! This is beautiful. My 12 year old is going to sing it in church. Thanks for making it so easy to transpose. We had to change keys for her voice! You are amazing. Thank you!
Do you have audio of just the piano part? I am playing this and I get really nervous if I can’t hear my part before I play it.
I have a Laurel in my class that is so shy that she has never given a prayer, led the theme, or answered a question. I heard her singing at Youth Conference last summer and I discovered she had a beautiful voice. I have been working on her to sing in church, and although I don’t really sing, I told her I would sing with her. She has finally agreed.. and we are singing The First Noel. This is life changing for this darling girl. Thank you for your inspiring music.
That’s so great… Wish her luck from me!
