For the Beauty of the Earth

About the Song

Music by Conrad Kocher, Lyrics by Folliott S. Pierpoint, Arranged by Sally DeFord

This arrangement is very simple. It’s designed to be learned quickly by the smaller choir. It uses the traditional melody, and there’s really nothing tricky about it. An optional flute obbligato is included for both versions.

The accompaniment is the same for both versions, and can also be used to accompany a soloist, though there is no solo score.

Lyrics

For the beauty of the earth;
For the beauty of the skies
For the love that from our birth
over and around us lies
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise

For the beauty of each hour
of the day and of the night
Hill and vale and tree and flower;
Ssun and moon and stars of light
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise

For the joy of human love;
Brother, sister, parent, child
Friends on earth and friends above;
Ffor all gentle thoughts and mild
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise

    We are playing this in church in a couple of weeks for the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Instead of choir we are making it an instrumental piece with my daughters on the violin and flute and adding a cello. It is beautiful! Thank you for the arrangement.

    I’d like to buy some hymn preludes for piano. How can I do that?

    Dear Sally,

    I’ve been using this arrangement of yours for several years with a church choir of mine. Now the men have all left, the women are too weak for SSA, so it’s out of the repertoire. Next week I’ll have a test rehearsal with a new choir. My piece of choice to use in getting to know that choir is… “For the Beauty of the Earth”. Thank you for writing in such a wonderful idiom!

    God Bless,

    Quintus

    We have used your arrangement for “For the Beauty of the Earth” for years!
    I just recently found your website and have downloaded the mp3 accompaniment file.
    When this COVID madness is over and I can again sing for senior groups, nursing homes and the like, I will be adding it to my repertoire!
    Thank you and God Bless you!

    Did “For the Beauty of the Earth” as an instrumental for this morning’s offertory at Zion Lutheran Church– flute, melodica, and organ. Beautiful music that was well-received. Thanks for sharing your talent!
