He Is Risen
(Congregational Accompaniment)

 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

1 Corinthians 15:21-22 (KJV)

About the Song

Words: Cecil Frances Alexander
Music: Joachim Neander
Arrangement: Sally DeFord

Cecil Frances Alexander wrote some of the most gorgeous hymn texts I know. Her words are full of vivid, colorful imagery. This one is no exception.

This arrangement is designed to accompany a congregation. Both the piano and the organ play from the score provided. The congregation sings from Hymn #199 of the 1985 hymnbook used in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (You can download the hymn version here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/music/library/hymns/he-is-risen?lang=eng Use the pulldown menu at the top right of the screen for other languages.) The piano accompaniment is challenging since the tempo is fairly quick. The organ score is in simple hymn format.

Lyrics

He is risen! He is risen!
Tell it out with joyful voice.
He has burst his three days’ prison;
Let the whole wide earth rejoice.
Death is conquered; man is free.
Christ has won the victory.

Come with high and holy hymning;
Chant our Lord’s triumphant lay.
Not one darksome cloud is dimming
Yonder glorious morning ray,
Breaking o’er the purple east,
Symbol of our Easter feast.

He is risen! He is risen!
He hath opened heaven’s gate.
We are free from sin’s dark prison,
Risen to a holier state.
And a brighter Easter beam
On our longing eyes shall stream.

    I’ve loved your generosity for years and the wonderful music that you share with the world. No one can ever replace you Sally, you will always be special and kind, and will be remembered, no matter when you do decide to retire from writing new music, but we only hope it’s not yet!

    Due to an epic lack of participation for my Stake choir rehearsals leading up to our Stake Conference this weekend (communication issues likely, as well as lots of illness in our area, and who knows what else contributed to the very unusual and dismal lack of participation…), last Sunday we decided to punt last minute and use my fabulous my ward choir instead, using two pieces we had used for January and February.

    We needed a strong closing hymn that we could also involve the congregation in. What i had chosen before was not going to work. I’ll be honest. I looked here first and saw this arrangement, hot off the press.

    Your lovely arrangement of He is Risen was THE perfect piece to close our conference. It was exactly what we needed at the moment. It required *very* little rehearsal from my ward choir, but was powerful and beautiful. We sang the first verse just as is, half of the second verse a cappella, and the third verse the congregation joined in. It was thrilling and wonderful.

    I know that you feel like your are running on empty, but know that you have many praying for you and cheering you on. And your “I am just not feeling very inspired right now” arrangement was absolutely inspired and well received, and was *exactly* what we needed today. Thank you for sharing it with us! And thank you for sharing, even when you feel like you had little to give. It was enough. It was more than enough.

    Sally, Thank you for this message. Recently, my life has been changed, and for several months, I was simply doing what needed to be done…not all that I might have done.
    Be kind to yourself. Breathe. Pray.
    With love, Koleta Wells, Sutherlin, OR

    Sally DeFord–For years I have used your accompaniments and arrangements for our choir. They have all been beautiful. I am not involved with our choir now but want to say Thank you! Your music is beautiful. It has thrilled me to play it. You have made it so easy to use. What a great talent. May God bless you and your family. I can’t express my thanks enough.

    This is amazing — thank you! The congregational piano/organ duets are long-time favorites of our congregation at Christmas. It’s fantastic to have an Easter hymn as well. It’s a wonderful way to elevate the singing experience of the congregation and always brings such a special spirit. Thank you!

    I was hoping for a piano/organ duet for the opening hymn at church. When I looked I didn’t see one you had written, so I went about writing one myself. I was thrilled when I got your message. Yours is so majestic and beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent with us so that many people can feel the spirit of the message!
