Silent Night (Choir & Congregation)

About the Song

Text: Joseph Mohr; Music: Franz Gruber.  Arranged for choir, congregatin, piano, organ and flute.

This arrangement may be sung entirely by the choir, entirely by the congregation, or (my favorite) two verses may be sung by the choir with the congregation joining for verse 3.

The congregation reads from LDS Hymns #204, or any similarly-harmonized version.

Lyrics

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
‘Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ, the Savior, is born
Christ, the Savior, is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth

I found this recording of a high school choir performing this piece. They have what sounds like an oboe (or at least an electric keyboard with the oboe sound) playing the flute part. This helped me so I hope it helps you as well 🙂

We have a challenging situation with a pianist, and looking for a recorded accompaniment to practice to. Is there an piano accompaniment recording available that we could download?

    To whom it may concern

I would like Sally DeFord’s beautiful arrangement of Silent Night in G major. I am the piano accompanist for a senior male voice choir in Newcastle Australia and this key would be most suitable. I don’t use any technology for transposing music but it would take me some time were I to transpose it myself. I accompany four adult choirs so I’m quite busy at this time of the year.
    I hope you can help.
    Kind regards

This is such a lovely version of Silent Night and I would love if you could write a SATB or SSA to go with the accompaniment

Quick question (you may not know): Does your Personal Composer software have the ability to export your compositions in a format compatible with the free MuseScore program (see https://musescore.org/en for info.)? I attempted to import a .pc file without much luck.

Thank you so VERY, very much for sharing your talents. My ward’s choir has benefitted for years singing your awesome arrangements and compositions!

This is very beautiful! I love all your works especially the Christmas songs. Thank you very much, Sally. I was wondering if you have the accompany track for this choir and congregation version available for download? Our choir are thinking about doing this song but we don’t have a pianist available to play. Thank you.

Beautiful! My question is what does the organ play? Is it going same time as piano?

The organ plays with the congregation, as marked on the score. It’s playing the hymn, but in two different keys, so your organist will want to read from the score or print transpositions.

Im still confused. why are the piano and the organ playing the same thing at the same time?

Darcy – the organ plays the music that is above/below the words (so the SATB accompaniment along with the choir/congregation). The piano is playing the two lines of music underneath the organ accompaniment. Hope this helps!
