Arise and Shine Forth

About the Song

This song was my unofficial contribution to the 2006 LDS Mutual (youth program) theme, “Arise and shine forth that thy light may be a standard for the nations.” It probably won’t contribute to memorization since it isn’t a verbatim scriptural setting, but I hope the young people will enjoy it.

The SAB mixed chorus arrangement of this anthem is designed to be very easy to learn. The last chord divides the sopranos and the men, but otherwise the arrangement is mostly unison and two- or three-part.

The duet version’s accompaniment is different from the others. It can also be used to accompany a solo rendition–just follow the melody line throughout.

Lyrics

A glorious dawn o’er all the world is breaking
Arise! you are called to bear the Savior’s name
The fire of His spirit in faithful hearts is burning
Arise! you are called to hold aloft its flame

Chorus:
Arise and shine forth, a light unto the nations
A beacon of salvation, a standard o’er the earth
Arise and shine forth to fill a world in darkness
With the brightness and the glory of the Lord
Arise! Arise and shine forth

A glorious dawn o’er all the world is breaking
For prophets again have heard the voice of God
He speaks from the heavens to every tongue and people
Arise! you are called to spread his word abroad

(Repeat chorus)

A glorious dawn o’er all the world is breaking
The hour is at hand when Christ will come to reign
When goodness and mercy will govern all creation
Arise! you are called to usher in the day

(Repeat chorus)

I seem to recall learning this one around 1998 at EFY/Academy For Girls. Not sure why I think it’s that year, but it’s been in my head ever since. It’s a beautiful song.

I have just played this through for the first time. I was so touched and uplifted by the lyrics. The musical notation is so perfectly matched and places emphasis on the words which lift the spirit. Thank you so much for this. Sylvia Hall. Sunderland Stake. UK.

I just feel compelled to thank you for your wonderful contribution to church music. I direct a traditional church choir in Southwest Missouri, and our church is one of only 2 or 3 in our community that maintains an SATB choir. As a music educator, I feel very strongly about the importance of a choir in worship, and of the opportunity that it offers for Christians of varying levels of musical talent to contribute to worship in a meaningful way. All that to say, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. We love your music!

Nice song.. Walk by faith and not by sight. Courage. True.
