Peace is Born on Earth

About the Song

Since I was a child I have wondered on still, peaceful nights just which of all the stars in the sky was the one that led the wise men to Bethlehem… and how I might know it… and would I have known it then? Of course, it isn’t really important, but I still wonder and sometimes on clear nights I look for it.

I live in a world full of noise. Kids and dogs and telephones… Primary sharing times and cars full of giggling teenaged girls. Amid the noise and bustle of everyday living, a little stargazing can still calm and soothe my soul–if I remember to look for the “bright and morning star” who leads all who will follow him to peace.

“I Jesus …am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.”

Lyrics

I see a stable, cold and bare
A virgin mother, pure and fair
The light of heaven surrounds her there
Peace is born on earth

And in a manger, gently laid
A baby slumbers in the hay
A miracle is wrought this day
Peace is born on earth

I see the shepherds come in haste
To look upon their Savior’s face
And wise men seek this holy place
Where peace is born on earth

A new star rises in the heavens
I see the skies with glory riven
Unto us a Son is given
Peace is born on earth

Oh listen to the angel song
That heralds this eternal dawn
And through the years the strains prolong
Peace is born
Peace is born

I wonder now if I would know
Like men of wisdom long ago
The star that first was set aglow
When peace was born on earth

For as I lift my eyes afar
To seek the Bright and Morning Star
The light of heaven fills my heart
And peace is born on earth

This is so beautiful! And the Italian text will be so helpful to me, as we’ve just moved to Italy and I’m working on my Italian. Perhaps I’ll have an opportunity to share this piece with my new branch here in southern Italy. Your music is such a comfort to me while we’re so far away from our loved ones. What is your connection to Italy, and why did you include this translation?

Lead sheets for your music as well, for those of us who cannot really play “fake it.”

We have been planning to add the flute obbligato for our SATB choir as well. Has this problem been remedied? I’d appreciate knowing how other choirs have handled it? Did you just renumber the measures?

This is a beautiful song and our choir is rehearsing it for Christmas. We are using the flute part also. Unfortunately, there are problems syncing the flute with the SATB version. The obbligato has a repeat for the 2nd verse, but the choir part has none. That makes the measure numbers different. In addition to that, the choir version has the measures numbered, but there is a measure between 22 and 23 that isn’t numbered. So all the measure numbers after 23 are off by one. I wish the flute part had been added at the top of the SATB version like it is for the solo version and the SSA version.

I think we have it figured out now, but it hasn’t been easy.

Thank you for your talent and your willingness to share it.
I found Peace is Born on Earth in my Wards archive and we are learning it for Christmas. Then one of my choir members asked about the flute part. So I just copied that. I’m sure it will be beautiful.
