New Music: He Is Risen (Congregation)

Feb 17, 2023 | Musings, new

At a General Conference of our Church in 2015, I was struck by this undeniably wise message:

“When you cannot do what you have always done, then you only do what matters most.”

Robert D. Hales

Those “can’t do what we’ve always done” moments will hit at various times in life for each of us. For me, one of those times is now.

In the past couple of months, my heart has just been too busy to write. Normally I hear lyrics every day–in the simplest sentences spoken by children, in the voices of learned scholars, in testimonies borne over the pulpit, in casual conversation… you name it. Right now, that’s just not the case.

So I’m doing what matters most. Or, at least, I’m celebrating what matters most–the promise of life found in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  The new music this time is a congregational accompaniment for the Easter hymn “He Is Risen.”

(Yes, I do have a choral arrangement of that hymn and some of you have used it to accompany a congregation, but it really wasn’t meant for that purpose and requires some fussing to make it work.)

Until I’m able to find words to write again, there may well be more congregational accompaniments and instrumentals forthcoming. It’s just the way things are. Thank you to all those who have prayed for our family. It helps. It really does. And thanks for being patient with me.

Also, here’s a big shoutout to Rebecca Lord for sending me this gorgeous rendition she directed of “Beautiful Savior” (SSA version) with the BYU-Idaho Women’s Choir.

(Dr. Rebecca Lord conducting, Allison Vest on piano, Edward Poston on organ, and Clarissa Tracy on flute).

A lovely reminder that He’s what matters most.
