Lyric’s Lyrics, and Lyric’s Melody

Mar 14, 2012

A year ago, my daughter and her husband named their second child “Lyric Jaqueline.” They wanted to name her for her two grandmothers… so they went through all the musical terms they could think of, and landed on “Lyric.”

And so, said Lyric’s Mommy, Lyric is named after me. I still grin every time I think about it.

Lyric’s older brother weighed in at nearly 11 pounds. Lyric was just a little over half that. I thought, as I held her for the first time, about how very small she was, and yet how important to her Heavenly Father.

That impression stayed with me as I wrote Lyric’s lyrics, and I thought how Jesus taught with small things–sparrows, and lilies. And this scripture also came to mind:

“He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.” (Psalm 147:4 KJV)

Stars… lilies… sparrows… sheep… God is mindful of all of them, knows them by name, cares for each one–from the largest and brightest to the very smallest.

So the stars and the lilies and the sparrows and the sheep made their way into the words. “I Know My Father Loves Me” is Lyric’s song, but I realized as I wrote it that it’s also for me, and for anyone else who has ever felt small and insignificant.

I love this statement from Dieter F. Uchtdorf, a member of the First Presidency of the LDS Church:
“… the vast expanse of eternity, the glories and mysteries of infinite space and time are all built for the benefit of ordinary mortals like you and me. Our Heavenly Father created the universe that we might reach our potential as His sons and daughters. This is a paradox of man: compared to God, man is nothing; yet we are everything to God.”

I hope that someday when “Baby-Lyric”

spends a day as “I-Can’t-Do-It-Lyric,”

…or “This-Isn’t-What-I-Expected-Lyric,”

…or, “I’ve-Made-an-Awful-Mess-of-Things-Lyric,”

…or “Bad-Hair-Day-Lyric,”

…or “I’m-Gonna-Mail-Myself-to-Australia-Lyric,”

…or “It’s-Been-a-Long-Day-Lyric…”

…or runs up against any of the myriad disappointments and challenges we all have to live through…

…she’ll remember that He loves the sparrows, He tends the lilies, He counts the stars and calls each by a name of its own, and no matter how small she is or how small she feels, she is important to Him.

(Just a final note… I think they need to have several more children and name them things like “Echo” … um…”Quaver”?? “Mordent” ?? “Appogiatura” ??? Okay, I’ll leave off. Though I actually like “Echo.”)
