Close as a Quiet Prayer

Apr 10, 2018

The latest chapter of my “Songs for My Children and Grandbabies” saga is titled…

In Which The Song Written For The Youngest Grandbaby Gets Finished Before The Song For His Older Brother

Hopefully neither of them will know it worked out that way until it doesn’t matter any more.

Killian’s song is called Close as a Quiet Prayer.” I wrote it for him in the hope that he will always remember that Heavenly Father is never far away, and listens to his prayers no matter where he is or what he’s doing.

That knowledge has been a comfort to me throughout my life, and I hope it’s a comfort to him.

The song is voiced for children, and for vocal solo. Here’s a recording of the solo version, featuring vocals by Allyse Smith Taylor, and cello by Ramona McConkie:

When Allyse and I were recording last fall, she also sang this new version of “An Angel to Watch Over Me,” also with Ramona on cello:

At the time, I wasn’t sure I wanted to include it in the KidsAndGrandbabies project, because…  it wasn’t written as a children’s song… it’s not for or about my kids… it’s certainly not about *me*… blah blah blah…

but…

It’s definitely the way I hope my grandbabies will remember their own mother.  So it’s getting included.

Next up: Well, it should be the song for #3, but Malachi’s song is proving to be a challenge, soooo…. yet another version of “If the Savior Stood Beside Me.”  Three more, in fact. How does this happen?
